International Education Week Events

International Education Week 
November 12th to 18th 
Description:  Throughout the week there will be various free events around campus to promote International Culture and diversity.

Through Out the Week:
Photography Contest and Display
Photographs submitted by graduate students will be on display all week in the Graduate Life Center. Be sure to check out this amazing display. Photographs must be submitted by November 9, at 5:00pm, with an entry form. Submit your photos for a chance to win a prize! More details can be found on the entry form.

International Education Week Displays
Please take some time to view displays in the Newman Library, VT Bookstore, and Volume II Bookstore. The displays are based on The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind by William Kamkwamba.

Sidewalk Chalk Showdown
Showoff your artistic talent by drawing your country’s flag at the main entrance of the Graduate Life Center. You can pick-up the provided sidewalk chalk between 8:00am and 5:00pm Monday through Friday (Nov. 13. & 16-20) from GLC Room 110 (Graduate School Student Services area). Individuals, families and student organizations are encouraged to participate!

Friday November 13th
Dance of Nations 6:30 pm – 9:30 pm, November 13th 
Event type: Cultural Show
Description:
  Dance of Nations is an annual event in which many of our international student organizations perform dances from their nation to showcase their culture. Some select organizations will teach audience members their cultural dance after their performance. The event will include also include the sale of traditional foods and merchandise including international cuisine by India Garden and Hunan King.

Sunday November 15th
World Ping Pong Tournament 2:30 pm , November 15th 
Event type: Contest
Description: A World Ping-Pong Tournament will be held at Break Zone in Squires Student Center. Each team consisting of two players will represent one country from around the world. There will be free food for everyone and priczes for the top two teams! If you sign up as a team, please let us know if you have any country preference. Monday November 16th
Rice Around the World 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm, November 16th 
Event type: International Food
Description: The GLC Fellows are hosting a showcase of international student organizations! Each organization will prepare a rice dish based on their own culinary heritage as well as have information on their organization available. Interested organizations should email Lauren Keister or call 231-9561 to discuss details.

Individual students are also welcome to sign up to bring a rice dish that represents their country. If you want to bring a dish as an individual please complete this survey. Drinks, plates, napkins, etc will all be provided so all we need from you is the rice!
Come by to sample the cornucopia of rice from around the world!

Groove to Bollywood Moves 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm, November 17th 
Event type: International Dance Lessons
Description:Spice up your day by burning a few calories in grace, style, and rhythm. Join a FREE dance session to spice up your personal dancing style by learning some classic Bollywood dance moves. Bring water and wear comfortable clothes and shoes. Add your personal twist: Dance barefoot and for the girls: style up by wearing a flowy skirt. Hungry Hokies Fast-a-thon and Dinner Doors open at 5pm, Dinner at 5:30pm, November 17th 
Event type: Fundraising Event
Description:The goal of this campus wide fast is to bring awareness of those that go hungry in Blacksburg, VA. For each student, faculty, and staff member that fasts, donations to the Blacksburg Interfaith Food Pantry are requested. The fast will last for twelve hours and then participants are invited to a dinner at 5:30pm. The dinner will be followed by a series of speakers including Nikki Giovanni and Fredda Cromer, from the Interfaith Food Pantry. Register every Thursday until Nov. 17 in front of McBryde and on the Drillfield. Together we can go hungry so someone else doesn’t have to. Sponsored by the Muslim Students Association.

International Experiences Speech Contest 7:00 pm, November 19th 
Event type: Contest
Description: 
The Phi Beta Delta international honor society is sponsoring this speech contest for VT faculty, staff, and students. Participants must prepare a five-minute speech based on one facet of your international experience, describing how it has changed your life. $50 cash prizes will be awarded to winners in the following categories: (1) international, (1) US undergraduate student, (1) international and (1) US graduate student, and faculty/staff. Kevin McDonald, VP for Equity and Inclusion, will serve as master of ceremonies.

Our annual Dance of Nations event is tonight to kick off International Week.

Tonight’s event will feature dances from 17 different groups, and will have food from all around the world. Please come out and enjoy a night of global dances.Then right after the show, the official Dance of Nations after party will be held at Awful Arthurs on Draper Road until 2:00 am.

Hellenic Association and Inner DC present “THRILL HER” 10:00pm – 2:00 am, October 30th

Description: A collaboration between InnerDC and Virginia Tech’s Hellenic
Association, come attend with us as we blow the roof off Awful Arthurs a
second weekend in a row! There was no mistake what a huge success the Euro Night party was, so no doubt this one will be better. To accommodate the 400+ turnout last
Saturday, we will be bringing in an extra DJ and more sound equipment so
be sure to put your game face on.

PROCEEDS will go towards the InnerDC non-profit organization to help
support struggling youth music programs in public schools.

Description: The International Street Fair is one of the most colorful and bustling events of the semester. On Saturday, April 4th, College Ave. turns into a crowded marketplace. This event, held from 11:00am-4:00pm, is a great opportunity for adults and children of all ages to come and learn about different countries. Exotic dishes and even some tongue twisting names are traded in a festive mood. The participating international organizations bring their best to your taste buds, while the performers make you move with their native folkloric rhythms. Arts and crafts from countries around the world are also a part of this beautiful display.

Healing Sounds of Turkish Sufi Mystic Music 6:00pm-8:00pm April 4th 
Description: Latif Bolat, Turkish Singer, Composer and Scholar of Turkish Music and Folklore, creates an intimate, storytelling atmosphere that invites us to recognize our common humanity through the arts. With a vast repertory that includes songs in classical, folk and Sufi mystic music styles, he accompanies his powerful resonant singing on the baglama (long-necked lute), and various other traditional Turkish folk instruments. Sponsored by: the Turkish Student Association, CISO, Peace Through the Arts, and Blacksburg Dances of Universal Peace

Description: The Vietnamese Student Association proudly presents their annual culture show. In this show, we will feature an array of traditional dances, skits, Tae Kwon Do, and fashion shows to represent our traditions and heritage. We hope that you’ll be able to join us for the show, and afterwards at our after party. FREE to public!

Taste of Vietnam Luncheon 12-4 pm April 5th 
Description: It’s opened to the public and we will be having Pho (vietnamese soup), spring rolls, and egg rolls. The Pho will cost $5 for unlimited, and the rolls have not been determined yet. We ask that everyone bring their own bowl and utensils, because we can’t provide enough for everyone. All the profits will be donated to our Philanthropy VietHope. Description: Hundreds of happy customers come to satisfy their tummies at the Bangladeshi  luncheon. The menu includes authentic Bangladeshi dishes such as Curry Chicken, Egg Curry, Mishti Doi, and many more! Two great deals are available on combos; a meat combo for $6.00 as well as a vegetarian combo for $5.00. They are known for their generous portions and cheap prices so don’t go anywhere else! Faculty Workshop: What’s Culture Got To Do With It? Working with International Students in the Virginia Tech Classroom  3–5pm April 8th 
Description: Virginia Tech hosts and educates over 2,000 international students from more than 130 different countries each year. Beyond the general anxiety of learning to live in a new culture, international students must also learn to navigate the culturally rich environment of the United States university classroom. This workshop will layout a variety of cultural obstacles facing international students at Virginia Tech, and it will also help teaching faculty understand the cultural frameworks that underpin teaching and classroom behaviors in the United States. Themes for this workshop will include: cultural hierarchy, plagiarism, and communication styles. Additionally, the workshop leaders will provide explanations for and about cultural misunderstandings and strategies for working towards appropriate conclusions.
